![]() Sunday, July 27, 2003 I now understand why cats are so cocky. It's because they're so good at catching mice. I come home from going out for ice cream and my dad, to my horror, says, "Oh, Moko [my cat] chased a mouse into the house, and into your room, so I locked them in..." First thought: I better not find a dead mouse on my oriental rug! I cautiously open my door and my cat scuries out empty-handed...er...empty-pawed...empty-mouthed? And no dead mouse on my carpet. Of course my mum insists we search for the mouse immediately. I realize after being locked in a room with a cat, that mouse has certainly found a good hiding place and will not be moving any time soon... Especially with three noisy humans in the room. That or it already escaped somehow... Later I'm sitting at my computer working online, when I'm suddenly bombarded with the stench of skunk floating in on the breeze from outside. I get up to close my windows and apparently caught the mouse by surprise for it flew under my bed... Setting up barricades, coaxing with cheese, cornering, ignoring, sneaking up on... I finally caught it in a cup, but it jumped out and I had to start all over again... I was amazed at how intelligent this mouse was. It did not merely run and hide, it would trick me into looking in the wrong direction, evade my baricades, run when I wasn't looking, move to a different location when it knew I thought it was staying still... I did catch it in the end, and set it free outside where it belonged. But I now have infinitely more respect for cats... posted by Shannon | 1:28 AM |
