![]() Tuesday, July 02, 2002 Back on the subject of music, I did find this great little hole-in-the-wall bootleg store, lots of live stuff and releases I've never heard of before, some with pretty good prices, some not so good prices [examples: $15 for Adore...but $59 for a rare Bjork album]...but it was still cool, I found it under an arcade near Teramachi-dori while wandering around downtown Shijo one day... CD stores there [wow is it weird to say 'there' instead of 'here'] are pretty amusing, first you've gotta find the section of English music, then you gotta find your genre, then it gets interesting trying to navigate to the artists you want because they mix their two phonetic alphabets [Katakana and Hiragana] with roman characters [and just for fun mix in some Chinese-based Kanji]...and since I can't read characters...it was rather interesting...but I managed to get the hang of it... The first CD place I found was 9 flights of escalators up to a Tower Records [I wonder if they meant the play on words...] and then an HMV, both major corporate rip off joints...and then I found a couple little stores that were actually worthy of my attention. So I wondered around, comparing prices, looking for bands I like, seeing what prices they go for out of curiosity, etc. But I do have one tiny little gripe with CD stores in Japan...WHERE IS TOOL!?!?!?!?!?! Out of the eight billion and forty-two places I went, I only managed to find Lateralus, Undertow and Opiate a grand total of...one time! []Not to mention A Perfect Circle, nowhere to be found...] And this one measley time was at a video and CD rental place...rental place! I highly highly pity any fans there, how do they survive? Tool even toured there in April, and yet anytime I'd ask a store clerk, "Sumimasen, Tool wa doko desu ka?" they'd look at me crazy as if no such band has ever existed...[*winces*]... The stores did happen to have a lot of Marilyn Manson, a good selection of NIN, and you could find Pumpkins stuff here and there, I suppose those are redeeming features...but still...tisk tisk tisk... And not to mention the overwhelmingly massive selection of skater band types...you find the rock racks, and you're like, oh! great! a big selection!...uh...skater band...skater band...japanese band...skater band...misplaced j-pop...skater band...hmmmm...ooh, good sign! A Metallica section!...skater band...heheh, you get the idea... A few places had rows upon rows of Rolling Stones stuff, I wonder if they were really big there or something... And I did have something else to talk about...but I forget what it was...I do that all too often... posted by Shannon | 10:26 AM |
