Tuesday, May 28, 2002 I think yesterday might make it on the "top five coolest things that have ever happened to me" list. Well, maybe it wasn't that exciting...but c'mon people, humor me... So it was graduation for the senior class, and our guest speaker was my friend Chris's dad, Nobel Prize winner Dr. Roberts. This, in and of itself is a pretty cool thing...and it was nice weather all day. Then right after the graduation ceremony was adjourned, it began to rain...and to a lot of people that might seem like a bad omen...but I like rain, and anyway...the cool part didn't happen 'till around dinner time that night after all the seniors had left. I was on my way to dinner with Jane and suddenly, when I was within 20 feet of the dining hall there was this enormous crash. The fire alarms went off and everyone hurried outside and huddled together under the cloisters. The Gaccon dormatory had been struck by lightning. The rain grew stronger and harder every minute- so heavy that I couldn't see the trees across the football feild. And it began to hail. It was as if a hurricane had appeared out of nowhere. The thunder kept rumbling, louder and louder each time. The again came a crash so loud that everyone screamed. This time, it struck Therriot dorm. The firefighters arrived with four trucks and a bunch of police cars. The alarms were still screaming and the firefighters were unrolling their hoses, and crash. Lightning hit Therriot again. We're still not allowed in any upper floors in the main building where Gaccon is, there's caution tape on the stairwells, and the students who live in any of the upper floor dorms [Coe, Thayer, Gaccon, Sawyer...] are all forced to stay elsewhere [Therriot, which managed to escape without any damage, and West campus]. our fire alarm system's been completely fried, so classes were almost cancelled today...and I never did get to have dinner... posted by Shannon | 10:35 AM |
